Akhu's Movie Reviews: 'Gambit' (1966)
Movie: Gambit
Year: 1966
My Rating: 8.4/10 Stars ********'
This was quite a bit better than I expected it to be. Michael Caine recruits the unsuspecting Shirley MacLaine to assist him in the heist of a valuable piece of sculpture from the richest man in the world. I especially like how they mislead you at the beginning, but I won't give that part away any more than that. Check this one out, especially if you like jewel-thief/heist themed movies, its another classic.

Sugartown was written by songwriter/producer Lee Hazlewood, and was released as a single by Nancy Sinatra in 1966 where it would peak at #5 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song was officially released under Nancy's 1967 Sugar LP. So there is this week's Oldies Rewind, enjoy!

Your Oldies Rewind: 'Get Ready' by The Temptations (1966)
Today, Your Oldies Rewind returns after an extended hiatus, and yes its been called different things throughout time, but this is the latest title, and I may stick with this one, so yay! Today we feature the 1966 hit song Get Ready, by American Motown legends The Temptations. The classic five members of The Tempations were David Ruffin, Melvin Franklin, Paul Williams, Otis Williams , and Eddie Kendricks, which came out of Detroit, Michigan circa 1960. Many genres were covered and many classic hits were produced to echo throughout the decades and still do, and as many of you already know this song has been covered by many acts many times, but the original still holds steady. Get Ready was actually written by Motown singer Smokey Robinson, and peaked at #29 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and #1 on the Billboard Hot R-and-B Singles chart. Get Ready was released in 1966 on the group's Gettin' Ready album. And there it is, keep on people, keep on!

Your Weekly Classics Shuffle: 'Sunny' by Bobby Hebb (1966)
We're back again with Your Weekly Classics Shuffle, and the result isn't actually a shuffle result this time around. I decided to feature the 1966 song Sunny, by African American singer/songwriter Bobby Hebb as I recently featured the house-remake of this song in another post. Bobby Hebb (born Robert Von Hebb) was born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1938, and past away in August 2010 at the age of 72. Sunny was his most well-known song and it appeared on his 1966 Sunny album, and it has been covered by many artists over the years including Cher, Boney M., Boogie Pimps, Georgie Fame, James Brown and many more.

A Brief Movie Review for 'Alfie' (1966)
Movie = Alfie (1966)
Director = Lewis Gilbert
Rating = 3.8/5 stars ***''The original 'Alfie' (starring Michael Caine) is an interesting movie, and not exactly what I expected it to be either. It is in fact much better than one might initially think after reading the taglines and movie brief. It is a movie about a playboy who leads a reckless love life and doesn't seem to have much other purpose in life than scoring with as many women as he sees fit; but it is also about Alfie having to face up to reality that he is now a middle aged-adult and starts to find himself confused as he begins to leave the lifestyle that defined who he was for much of his youth and begin to face what it means to be a father and someone who no longer fits the old mold quite so well (almost a mid-life crisis sort of movie, but of one who never moved on past the party-stage). Michael Caine does a great job in this role, and I recommend watching this one, and after doing so I have little to no interest in the more recent version.

Now They Call Them Classics (Weekly): 'With A Girl Like You' by The Troggs (1966)
So I've changed the title from "oldies" to "classics" as I felt the former was too limiting. So this week's Now They Call Them Classics goes to another English rock band from the 1960's called The Troggs and their 1966 hit classic song With A Girl Like You. The Troggs were formed in 1964 out of Andover, Hampshire, England and signed by the manager of The Kinks, and according to Wikipedia the band members are Reg Presley (vocals), Dave Wright (guitar), Chris Britton (guitar), Richard Moore (vocals and guitar), Pete Staples (bass guitar), Ronnie Bond (drums), and Tony Murray (bass guitar). With A Girl Like You was a single released by the Troggs in 1966 and which reached #1 on the UK Singles Chart that year. There have been many cover versions of this song, and it has also appeared on a few film soundtracks so check that out if your keen.

Now They Call Them Oldies = 'I Want To Tell You' by The Beatles (1966)
The results for this week's Part 1 of Oldies shuffling goes to The Beatles, and their 1966 song I Want To Tell You. I Want To Tell You was written by George Harrison and released on the 1966 Revolver album (one of my favorites by The Beatles, which is why it comes up on my playlist so often). According to the Wikipedia page the Revolver album was released in anticipation that it's focus more on the electric-guitar-rock sound as opposed to the folk-rock sound on their previous album, which would help to introduce a new phase in the group's recording career, and of course it reached #1 on both the UK and US album charts and remained their for a number of weeks on each chart. Check out the Wikipedia page link above for more trivia and info. So there is Part 1, Part 2 to be posted soon, thanks for stopping by...world...

Now They Call Them Oldies = 'Homeward Bound' by Simon and Garfunkel (1966)
Part 1 of this week's so-called oldies goes to Simon and Garfunkel and their 1966 hit song Homeward Bound. The American duo of Simon and Garfunkel debuted way back in 1957 and originated out of Forest Hills, Queens, New York City, NY, USA. Homeward Bound comes off of their 1966 album titled Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme, and upon its release it would peak at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. According to the wikipedia page, Paul Simon wrote this song whilst stranded overnight at a train station in NW England out of his desire to return home to NYC and his life there. Paul Simon fans no doubt are already well aware, but for all those who aren't already aware, Simon's newest album is set to be released on April 12th, 2011 and if you want more information on that you can visit his website HERE. As for the video below, only a live-tv version was available for embedding on youtube, and so there it is.

Now They Call Them Oldies: 'I Want You' by Bob Dylan (1966)
So much for just the relatively recent, I have to hit shuffle on my playlist and see what "oldies" song comes up and share it with the realm of vloggers! Holy crapola! I guess there's a place for the old after all! The first song to pop up on my shuffle is...I Want You (1966), by American singer/songwriter/musician Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan was born in Duluth, Minnesota USA in 1941, and his birth name is Robert Allen Zimmerman. I Want You appeared on Dylan's 1966 album Blonde On Blonde and actually appeared on the playlist for a recent wedding I DJ'ed for, good stuff! Now, there isn't possibly anything I could tell you about the Dylan that you don't already know (and I don't know much), so on to the song...Oh and BTW, I will be featuring older songs (that is pre-80's music) at least once a week or so from now on so hopefully I can make some ends meet with some of you out there.
